Goals

Before sitting down to write this post I searched the word ‘goals’ on a free stock image website, this photo by Glen Carrie was the first result. I love it because the single goal is almost lost in a fog.

That’s how I feel.

It’s how I’ve felt for a while now, but with so many distractions I never had to face it full on before. I’ve had this feeling that there’s no clear direction to head in anymore, at least, not one that feels responsible or realistic.

I’ve been in online therapy, for BFRB, on and off for the past two years. I’ve been awful at keeping up with it. I’m nearing the end of the program and I just want to be able to put it behind me, reflect on what I’ve learned, and keep progressing forward.

One of the worksheets is about creating values-consistent goals. What matters to me most in life and how can I actively do things to make progress towards my values? In an effort to strengthen my commitment towards these goals, I’m sharing them here.

- Family

1st Goal: Call my family (or friends) in California (or sister in Japan) twice a week.

2nd Goal: Go on romantic dates (let it be cheesy) with my spouse more often.

- Community

1st Goal: Connect with a new friend twice a week. (try and plan a hang out at least once a week)

2nd Goal: Do something fun outside of the house once every weekend.

- Creativity

1st Goal: Participate in monthly creative projects such as Inktober and NaNoWriMo.

2nd Goal: Really and truly start blogging again. (heh...)

- Learning

1st Goal: Take a class either for a hobby or for work.

2nd Goal: Attend a public lecture at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center.

- Kindness

1st Goal: Volunteer somewhere in town.

2nd Goal: Write snail mail letters to loved ones.

In addition to these I've taken another look at my yearly goals, and though I think sorting through those deserves another post, know that I have not forgotten about what I set out to do. The more tangible things are where I'm behind, the lifestyle goals have been working out though.

Notice that 'career' goals are nowhere to be found on this or other goal posts (heh...goal posts) and that's on purpose. I'm pretty private about my job and I'm still working through how to promote myself more online. It's tough when the lines are so blurred.

I'm working on myself and writing about it helps so I hope this post is not oversharing. Writing has been a calming activity and sharing goals has helped make them more real.

July Goals | Results

At the start of July, I compiled some goals for the month. Let's see how I did!
(Note, I am currently in California on my summer vacation, so goal creation for August will have to wait till we're already in the thick of it...and probably most will consist of finishing up July goals, tbh.)

JULY GOALS
  • Write 10,000 words of my novel for Camp NaNoWriMo  DONE! Now to get ready for November...
  • Read 'The Handmaid's Tale' I'm going to borrow the book from my sister-in-law as soon as I see her next.
  • Wedding Photos I've got them on Flickr now, but I want to write about them here, so expect that to come in batches.
  • Summer CA Road Trip and a wedding ♥︎
  • Start at least 2 of the 12 collabs I'm working on YouTube is interesting...I love it and hate it. So many of my collabs had to be postponed...so we'll see where they go.
  • Try some watch-a-longs on Rabb.it with my Twitch crew (and plan the Cats one for Aug.) DONE-ish...I tried it out privately. Will schedule a Labyrinth screening and a Cats screening as soon as I'm home.
  • VidCon pictures and vlog  DONE! (here)
  • Start working on the wig I was commissioned to do (and stream it via Twitch)  DONE! I got the sideburns done and will start on the back of the wig next.

Thank you for reading! (Honestly, this is a way to hold myself accountable. Your encouragement is greatly appreciated.)

July Goals | Halfway Through 2017

It's been a while since I actually wrote out my goals. So instead of occasionally looking at my year goals and deciding that I have all year, (the year is now half over!) I'm going to break things down monthly. So lets start with the halfway progress and move to additions for July.

Life Stuff

  •  Read (at least) 25 books.
I'm very behind, but listening to a few audio books to catch up.
  • Shop more consciously.
It's going well! I bought a 'Made in the USA' dress from my friend Laura's shop, Tin Lizzy.  So far that's been it but I have plans to go thrift shopping if I find I need some new summer shorts.
    • Waste less.
Using a lot of low packaging and reusable products...I might have to make a favorites video soon...
        • Start my journey to a capsule wardrobe.
Hehhh, not great. I finally donated all the dresses I was trying to sell...but I got 2 new t-shirts at VidCon and that new dress. My wardrobe is not a capsule...but I do wear all my t-shirts!
            • Don't put my life on hold due to fears.
Doing a bit better at this (it's mental health related) but it's a slow journey...

            Internet Stuff
            • Write about my 2015.
I NEED TO DO THIS STILL!
            • Write about my 2016.
I NEED TO DO THIS STILL!
              • (Finally) post wedding photos.
I NEED TO DO THIS STILL!
                • *Secret* project
Finally, something I can say I've done! It's livestreaming on Twitch and it's really fun!!
                • Sort out my digital life.
NOPE. Not sure if this will ever be done tbh...

                JULY GOALS

                • Write 10,000 words of my novel for Camp NaNoWriMo
                • Read 'The Handmaid's Tale'
                • Wedding Photos
                • Summer CA Road Trip and a wedding ♥︎
                • Start at least 2 of the 12 collabs I'm working on
                • Try some watch-a-longs on Rabb.it with my Twitch crew (and plan the Cats one for Aug.)
                • VidCon pictures and vlog
                • Start working on the wig I was commissioned to do (and stream it via Twitch)
The idea is to work a bit on each of these things all week. I might take to Twitter to celebrate or lament about the progress. Here's to a busy (but hopefully successful) month!

                2017 Goals

The last time I wrote about my goals was last summer and about 50% of those were completed. But I haven’t done a big 'start of the year’ goals post since 2015. I never did a ‘In 2015 I…’ post despite many life-changing and amazing things that happened that year. The truth is, the following year was tough, and I’m not going to pretend that those reasons are magically gone due to a revolution around the sun. The feeling of renewal at the new year is in part due to tradition. The thing is, humans love traditions. So, I’m just gonna go with it. Here are my 2017 goals. Through this ‘blog' slash 'online journal' slash 'chronicles of me,' I’ll be keeping you up-to-date on the progression of said goals. They might become short updates or full posts. Anyways, enjoy.

                Life Stuff

                •  Read (at least) 25 books.
A book's a book, so picture books and comics (TPBs) count. ;)

                • Shop more consciously.
Research and learn about the options that are out there and the consequences of shopping at different places. Use that knowledge to weigh my options. Think about environmental impact, human rights, and health; but also take price and my current financial situation into account.

                • Waste less.
As much as I can, when I can, try and lower my carbon footprint.

                • Start my journey to a capsule wardrobe.
Always feel confident and comfortable in the clothing I wear. Learn more about the issues regarding 'fast fashion'. Maybe sew some clothes myself...

                • Don't put my life on hold due to fears.
A little cryptic but this applies to many things in my life.

                Internet Stuff
                • Write about my 2015.
                • Write about my 2016.
                • (Finally) post wedding photos.
                • *Secret* project (shhhh) <—totally a link to it. pls follow…? and share ♥
                • Sort out my digital life. (*sings* digital style!)
This one might need some explaining. I tend to start a lot of projects, join a lot of Facebook groups, enter into different online communities, and then run out of time for everything. I want to start over, in a way. My time is valuable and I don't want to spread myself too thin. This also references my files and hard drive situation...and it is a 'situation.' Oh and if you know what 'digital style' is from...wow look a bar graph!

                Summer Goals

It's been a long time since there's been a goals post here on MagicCatJenny, so I'm going to get that going again with some goals for this coming summer. Summer begins with the solstice on June 21, but I'm going to let my window of time be June, July, and August. (That photo is from last summer, from our Hawaii honeymoon.)

                2015 Goals: Revised

Normally I would not do this. Normally I would (and have) simply see how the year went and at the end review what I accomplished and what I did not and move on. However, there has been a change in my life since I first created my 2015 goals, that that is I've moved across the country. So, as it is my blog and it is my right, I am revising my 2015 goals now, as we are more than halfway through the year. Let's do this!

                1. Get Married!!!
                Staying the same, because duh.

                2. Visit the California Science Center Visit the White House.
I've never seen it, not even for school or anything.

                3. Visit the MOCA. Visit the National Zoo.
This one is on Jim's list. Animals!

                4. Read 25 books.
Staying the same, though I might be a bit behind...due to the getting married and moving across the country thing...

                5. Make new Etsy business cards.
Staying the same...and I have yet to do that...hmmmm.

                6. Treat my blog more like a business and my YouTube channel less. Have faith in my creativity, do what it takes, work hard, always be myself.
Business or not, I need to stop thinking so hard about not 'selling out' and just work hard no matter what. Work hard but always be honest about it. That's my new goal.

                7. Assess what's important to me in life and remove the clutter.
                Keeping this one the same.

                8. Organize my digital files.
                Keeping this one the same.

                9. Take a road trip.
                Keeping this one the same...and I think it's qualified....lol

                10. Honeymoon!!!
                OH YEAH...3 more days!!!!!

                2015 Goals

                1. Get Married!!!
Most excited for this huge life change and the awesome party we are going to throw. It's my favorite goal this year and the one I know I'm gonna meet. Um duh.

                2. Visit the California Science Center
I need to make sure I do it this year!

                3. Visit the MOCA.
                Same as above!

                4. Read 25 books.
I think this might be the year for me. I've never successfully completed this goal in the past but I'm really going to give it my best this year. (Even if that means watching less TV shows)

                5. Make new Etsy business cards.
My Etsy shop did great this year and it's clear the people want my feminist buttons more than my plushies. Plushies are not going away but I want my business cards to reflect more of a variety of my products.

                6. Treat my blog more like a business and my YouTube channel less.
This blog and my YouTube channel are tow of my 'jobbies' and I enjoy taking them slightly more seriously than a regular hobby. Over this past year though I have come to accept that my YouTube channel is more on the hobby side and my blog is more on the job side, not in terms of success but in terms of how comfortable I feel about monetization and brand deals and taking that next real business step. True I have ads on my videos but since I'm such a small channel anything more than that would not feel right. Blogs are a different story I feel, and when/if I get the opportunity to monetize more and turn one into something that more closely resembles a job, I'm going to lean towards this blog for that.

                7. Assess what's important to me in life and remove the clutter.
I'll admit it to you right now, I am dangerously close to being called a hoarder. It's not a love of things per say, but a love of memories and to me things symbolize memories. It's a problem that I know I need to work on and this year I plan to take a large step and get rid of a significant amount of my possessions. I need to clean house. It's not going to be easy, there'll be tears, I'll hate it, but in the end it will be good for me. Life only moves forwards not back, it's time I start moving with it.

                8. Organize my digital files.
So many hard drives, so many folders, so many screen caps and saved images and raw video footage. I need to really really get it all cleaned up and each digital file needs a purpose and a spot so I can find things for once!

                9. Take a road trip.
I love driving with my Jimmy. (Well he drives and I navigate.) He's been itching to take a road trip lately and I think we might be able to swing it this year. Even if it's just for a weekend.

                10. Honeymoon!!!
It might not be right after the wedding but it will happen! I'm so excited! We don't have anywhere planned yet, we're focusing on planning this wedding first, but we have a few ideas. Yay!!

                2014 Goals: Results

At the start of 2014 I made a list of goals, let see how I did!

                1. JAPAN TRIP 2014!!

                It happened! Re-live it with me here: Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4 | Day 5 | Day 6 | Day 7 | Day 8 | Day 9 | Day 10 | Day 11
Oh yeah, and when I was there I got engaged!!!

                2. Visit the MOCA.

We did not get around to it again this year, but it's on next years list and we'll make it happen!

                3. Premiere (at least) one new product per month on Nerdy Monsters.
Check 'em out! All listings have been renewed for the New Year so get 'em before they're gone!

                4. Make new business cards.
                What do you think?

                5. Double my followers on my blog and my YouTube channel.
                Blog: 91 to 200
                YouTube: 1k to 2k
I honestly stopped counting the blog followers about half way through the year. I'll count them when I update my ads page this month but it was not something on my mind. My YouTube subs are around 1.6k I think. I got a little sick of obsessing over follower numbers this year.

                6. Doodle more.
I finished my super secret doodle project, I'll be sharing it with you soon!

                7. Do the music thing.
I'm just not a musical person. I have far too many hobbies as it is. I'll leave the music making up to Jim and I'll stick to videos, writing, costumes, plushies, jewelry, hairbows, etc. ;P

                8. Stop stressing about YouTube.
I think I did this. I love making videos regularly but I also realize that if I ever stop loving it I'll stop doing it. The strange thing is, though this year I stopped striving to be the next iJustine I also started to take my channel a bit more seriously...in a way. I signed my channel to MakerGen, a faction of my company for smaller channels, and I did not really feel as much like a sell out as I thought I would. (In fact, this is the first time I've publicly shared the fact that I signed. *shrug* It's not really a big deal.)

                9. Visit the California Science Center.
I feel like I've been here before as a kid but I could just be thinking of the Discovery Science Center which I know I've been to. Jim and I did not make it to this place last year but we are determined to do it this year!

                10. More fun photo shoots & do (at least) one outfit post a month.
So I technically did not do one outfit post per month. (Do you know how much effort it is to set up lights and a tripod in the morning before work??) However I'm considering this half done since I really did make an effort. Next year I'll do even more!

Blogger Blues (& Goals to Fix It)

Photo an hour >> May 28th

Somethings been bothering me lately and that's the fact I've not really been blogging the past couple of months. Sure I've been posting, but I don't have that true blogging feeling. If you're a blogger you know what I mean, that productive confident feeling you have when you're in that good blogging groove.

I know why this is. Time. Ever since my company was bought by Disney things have gotten extremely busy for me at work. I'm grateful for everything that's come from it (especially my Silver Pass to the parks and the various other perks that come with being a cast member) but it's also brought on a lot of extra projects and work. So much so, that when I get home in the evenings, I'm too tired to blog. That seems like a silly excuse but when you add that to my weekends being filled with wedding planning, keeping my Etsy shop alive, exercising at the pool when I can, keeping my YouTube channel active (and Disney trips, no real excuse for that one) my blog has made it's way to the bottom of my hobby list.

I'm not a full time blogger. If I was, I would be spending those 9 hours a day working it. I'm lucky if I have 10 minutes in the morning to prepare a photo post. (Which is why I'm spending my lunch break at work writing this.) I hate it, really, I miss working on this blog. So I have some blog post goals to complete before the new year. They are modest at best, but I need to keep things basic to be truly ready for the new year. I'm not giving up.

                Posts to make before 2015
                • The last 6 Japan posts.
                • More wedding planning posts as they happen.
                • Get up to date on all my makeup posts. (13 more CATS faces from the past + whatever I do from now and on)
                • This Year I... (about my life)
                • A Year in Review - 2014 (about the blog)
                •

50 Reasons You're Not Getting Etsy Sales - Self Evaluation

                (image)

I just got finished reading 50 Reasons You're Not Getting Etsy Sales from Handmadeology, and it was certainly an eye-opener. I'm not going to lie, my Etsy shop has had a very slow start. I've had it for a few years and I have made a whopping...2 sales. Total. I've sold more in a few hours at a craft fair. I'm not about to give up though, I'm a Gryffindor! So my latest goal is to check off all 50 reasons in this list and see if that changes anything. I'll be going back to this a few times so think of this as a mini series here on my blog. If you have an Etsy shop, consider doing this with me! If not...*shameless self promotion* check out my shop...? :) http://nerdy-monsters.com

                1. You don't have enough items.
Currently I have just about one page of products. It's recommended to have 2 or 3 full pages. That's a lot of products (and Etsy fees) but I am working towards reaching this.
                Status: In-Progress

                2. You don’t list often enough.
This year I've added at least one thing each month, but in months with more than one new listing...I've added them all at the same time. I guess this needs work as well.
                Status: In-Progress

                3. Your product photography “could use some work.”
I actually think I'm not too bad at this. I have a lighting kit and a DSLR so the quality is not what I'm worried about. I do think I could use more 'in action' shots. I'll put in 50% more effort for this month's new product and see if that yields any results.
                Status: In-Progress

                 4. You forgot to include dimensions.
I'm actually a bit inconsistent about this. About half of my items have dimensions and half don't. This is a very good observation and something I need to pay more attention to.
                Status: In-Progress

                5. You’re directing people offsite.
Not in my product descriptions! I direct them back to my Etsy shop front.
                Status: Complete

                6. Your descriptions are lacking.
I think I got this. Some are better than others but it is something I am thinking of each time I list or renew an item.
                Status: Complete

                7. You just got started.
                Ha. Ha ha, no.
                Status: Complete

                8. You don’t have any reviews yet.
I've got two sales and two reviews, both 5 stars. Boo-ya!
                Status: Complete

                9. You have poor reviews.
                Thankfully no.
                Status: Complete

                10. You’re not on social media.
Nerdy Monsters are on social media. (Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter) Am I being smart about it though? For the sake of this list I'll say that it's fine but I do want to improve my strategies.
                Status: Complete

                11. Your items don’t stand out.
This is something I really try and focus on! The Nerdy Monsters themselves were something born out of my imagination and completely original. I'll admit the rest of my items (buttons, hairbows, etc.) are not as original in their design but they complement the main focus of my shop; plush creations. I have a few other plush related different items up my sleeves that I can't wait to show everyone!
                Status: Complete

                12. You aren’t being featured outside of Etsy.
I am, a bit. I've been on blogs and such. I defiantly try to keep this happening. However, every time I've participated in a giveaway on another website or blog, it's never led to sales. Sure it's increased my social media, but that's not the same. I'm doing this but maybe not as well as I could have. I'm going to keep working on this.

                13. You aren’t being featured on Etsy.
Not at all. I'll try joining some treasury teams, but this sort of thing is mostly out of my control.
                Status: In-Progress

                14. You aren’t optimizing your titles.
Optimizing is what I do for my day job...so...I'd better be doing this!
                Status: Complete

                15. You are cramming too much into your titles.
This one's half and half. I need to be better about being specific rather than general.
                Status: In-Progress

                16. Your target market isn’t clear.
I'm not sure about this. I think I'm doing okay at keeping my target market (female, college-age, nerdy, collectors) but I'll admit there are a few items that might not completely fit in.
                Status: In-Progress

                17. You ignore your current customers.
I don't really have recurring current customers yet...but when it happens I will not ignore them!
                Status: Complete

                18. You don’t accept custom orders.
I LOVE custom orders! Please please please ask me about custom orders. I am willing to work with you!
                Status: Complete

                19. Your shop is all over the place.
I think I've got this under control. If any of you disagree, let me know.
                Status: Complete

                20. You haven’t listed anything new in a loooooong time.
I am releasing a new product every month this year!
                Status: Complete

                21. You never talk about your shop in person.
I...need new business cards. I try and talk about it in person but I'm too humble. I need to work on that.
                Status: In-Progress

                22. You don’t network with other sellers.
I am constantly emailing and messaging other sellers about advice and tips. I also love making friends who sell handmade. It's great for collaborating, cross-promotion, and splitting table costs at craft fairs.
                Status: Complete

                23. You aren’t blogging.
Well of course I blog, I'm blogging right now. I think I could stand to blog about my shop (without seeming like an ad) a bit more, but I need to really make those posts fun and interesting before I take that route.
                Status: Complete

                24. You haven’t been keeping up with Etsy’s changes.
Oh, I keep up with change.

                25. You aren’t tracking where the views are coming from.
Ugggggg, no. I have not been doing this at all. It's what I do for my day job so I have no excuse (Except for maybe being sick of it) Will work on this.
                Status: In-Progress

                26. Your shop looks neglected.
I'm always on my shop and tweaking it here and there.
                Status: Complete

                27. You take your sweet time to ship.
The post office scares me, seriously, yet I am pretty quick about shipping things out! My shop states 3-5 days from purchase to shipping and it's usually closer to 3. Whooo! I'm sticking to this.
                Status: Complete

                28. You look like a faceless corporation.
In the past I've fell into the trap of saying 'we' rather than 'I' when it's just me behind the shop. (Ok, sometimes my mom makes stuff, does that count as 'we'?) However, I'm pretty public about Nerdy Monsters being the brain child of MagicCatJenny (me). So, I think I've got this one down.
                Status: Complete

                29. You’re lying.
                Eww, no. Just no.
                Status: Complete

                30. You’re begging for sales.
I really hope I don't come off as desperate. I'm honest as to the state of my shop, but I in no way mean to guilt anyone into buying from be because of that. In fact, I'm rather scared about sharing my new Patreon page because I don't want to come off as begging. (whoops, told you)
                Status: Complete

                31. You copy other sellers.
I certainly don't feel as if I copy other sellers. Nerdy Monsters were born purely from my imagination. I may take inspiration from many places but I don't straight up copy. Sure, many people make hairbows and buttons, but I really try and put my own spin on things.
                Status: Complete

                32. You don’t pay attention to suggestions.
I'll admit, unless it's a commissioned custom order, I've kind of ignored these. I read once that you should never make things people ask for unless they are ordering it from you. I'm going to re-think this and see if it's really that bad to try out suggestions even if they go nowhere. Open mind time!
                Status: In-Progress

                33. You’re breaking copyright or trademark laws.
This one is a super gray area when you are dealing with fan-art or fan anything... I am not breaking any laws and am being careful, but having 'inspired by' work is always a bit blurry. This is not something I've ignored though, and I believe I am in the right with my shop. If you think otherwise, I'd be happy to hear what you have to say.
                Status: Complete

                34. Your prices are too low.
I've always had trouble pricing my items. If I go to high my target demo (teenagers) can't afford it, but if I go too low I wind up in that "what's wrong with it?" space. I've recently increased some prices to hopefully avoid that, but this is always a work in progress.
                Status: In-Progress

                35. Your prices are too high.
Nope, not the case. Defiantly the former.
                Status: Complete

                36. You haven’t developed a memorable brand or style.
The Nerdy Monsters themselves are there but the rest...not so much.
                Status: In-Progress

                37. You forget to respond to messages.
I don't get many messages yet. So I always always respond asap!
                Status: Complete

                38. You’re waiting instead of working.
I'm always creating new things! The sales are slow (and have been slow) but I enjoy the entire process of owning a shop and I know it will take time before things take off. I guess this is another way of saying 'don't give up'. I haven't.
                Status: Complete

                39. You aren’t offering combined shipping.
I do this, but until someone purchases more than one item I can't say I have this completely perfect yet. I'll get there.
                Status: In-Progress

                40. You aren’t offering a variety of products to choose from.
Oh yeah, with a new product every month of the year, I got this.
                Status: Complete

                41. You’re making it all about YOU.
I think this is on the right track. I have a separate  Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter for my shop and the monsters. I, however, don't update them as much as my personals. I'm sure there is more I can do as well.
                Status: In-Progress

                42. You aren’t collecting e-mail subscribers.
I do this! However it's not super popular yet. I send out one email per month (maybe I can do more?) I realized there was no link in my actual Etsy shop, so...now there is!  http://bit.ly/monstercat-email
                Status: Complete

                43. You don’t offer multiple payment options.
My direct checkout is totally turned on. That means shoppers can pay with Pay Pal, credit card, debit card, or Etsy Gift Card. Bam!
                Status: Complete

                44. You don’t ship internationally.
I do this! Though I've only ever shipped to the US from Etsy, I have shipped lots of goodies over seas to giveaway winners in the past.
                Status: Complete

                45. You don’t have an avatar image.
Oh, I never not have an avatar image. Done and done.

                Status: Complete

                46. You haven’t filled out your shop policies.
I update these all the time. The more I sell the more I lean. This place will never be 'complete' but I am aware of it's importance so...
                Status: Complete

                47. Your “trendy” products are outdated.
                Nope. I'm on trend. ;)
                Status: Complete

                48. Your shop is flooded with spelling and grammar mistakes.
I've checked and I'm pretty sure everything is okay. However, I have a hard time noticing things like spelling and grammar. I read so much those things fade in the background. So, if you notice any mistakes in my shop, I would greatly appreciate a private note about it.
                Status: Complete (i think)

                49. You aren’t directing people back to your store front.
I wasn't doing this!! Now, each item description has this at the bottom:  To see more of my plushies, hairbows, buttons and more, check out my store, Nerdy Monsters! http://nerdy-monsters.com
                Status: Complete

                50. You aren’t drawing from multiple revenue streams.
I'm still contemplating whether or not this is something I'm going to do. Should I list PDF tutorials or patterns? I think this is probably the last thing (and it is last on the list) to fix.

                2014 Goals

                1. JAPAN TRIP 2014!!

Kinda cheating since I already booked my flight...

                2. Visit the MOCA.

                Still...never been.

                3. Premiere (at least) one new product per month on Nerdy Monsters.
(That's 12 new things!) I also want to keep up to-date with current products and eally get serious with my store this year.

                4. Make new business cards.
                MagicCatJenny & Nerdy Monsters

                5. Double my followers on my blog and my YouTube channel.
                Blog: 91 to 200
YouTube: 1k to 2k (Push goal: 5k...not sure how that could possible happen though.)

                6. Doodle more.
I kinda sorta secretly started a doodle project a few months ago and had to put it on hold for a bit. I want to get back into it and finally show you guys.

                7. Do the music thing.
I'm such a failure at this. I never seem to be able to keep up with any instrument and always forget how to play them. This year I'm gonna get back on track with the ukelele and actually record some songs I've been working on.

                8. Stop stressing about YouTube.
Lets face it, I'm never going to be a full time YouTuber. It's going to be a hobby my whole life and I should not let my lack of success bother as much anymore. I'll still follow 'best practices' and put effort into my videos but I won't allow it to stress me out. (ie. Uploading every Wednesday; I'll aim for it but if it means neglecting relationships and responsibilities to upload a sub-par video on time, I'll take a break.)

                9. Visit the California Science Center.
I feel like I've been here before as a kid but I could just be thinking of the Discovery Science Center which I know I've been to.

                10. More fun photo shoots & do (at least) one outfit post a month.
I always love photo shoots with friends. The only problem is finding willing participants. I like doing both (taking photos and being the subject). What I'm going to do is start a list of great locations for photos shoots and try and actually plan these things with anyone who knows how to work a DSLR. (Any LA based friends reading this and are interested??)

                2013 Goals: Results

January of 2013 I wrote down 13 goals. I treated it as a LA bucket list in case I was planning to move the next year. (No plans to do so yet.) So it's time to review that big post and see what I accomplished, revised, and just plan forgot about over the last 12 months.

                1. Take a boat ride with Jim.
This was a Christmas 2012 present promise so I had no doubt it would come true. I did not, however, account for the fact I could change my mind. We were all set to go one weekend and we didn't. For one, it was overcast and I did not want the chance of rain. Also, it was going to be more expensive than I had imagined. What we ended up doing was going to the Griffith Observatory instead (see #6) and save our money for Japan instead. (see #13)

                2. See Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Nuart, dressed up.
Did this twice! It was weird, but a blast!

                3. Eat at 10 new restaurants in LA. - I decided to include bars if I got food there ;)

OK, so I know I ate at 10 (probably more) new places last year, but after number 8 I stopped recording them...so I say this one is completed.

                  1. Sake House By Hikari  B (good sushi, but nothing special)
                  2. Jackson Market and Deli  A+ (amazing sandwiches! It's also a way cool convenience store)
                  3. Susan Feniger's STREET  A- (loved it, but way expensive)
                  4. E K Valley  C (not bad but not great)
                  5. The Edison  A+ (such atmosphere! Only had fries for food but the cocktails were great)
                  6. Tusquellas Fish & Oyster Bar B (decent fish tacos)
                  7. Victor Jr's.  B (pretty good pizza but not my favorite)
                  8. Blind Barber A (love the speakeasy/behind an actual barbershop thing & the grilled cheeses are amazing!)

                4. Visit the LACMA.
Yes! We did! We also got to see the Stanley Kubrick exhibit and it was my favorite! See photos from that day here.

                5. Visit the MOCA.
No!!! I'll be moving this to my 2014 goals for sure!

                6. Go on a date with Jim to the Griffith Observatory.
It was so fun! It was my second time there and Jim's first. We did have to park a long ways down the hill and it was murder on my foot, but we had fun and Jim read all the plaques (as always!)

                7. Re-start 'The Jemima Project'.
Ha! I don't know if I'll ever complete this goal...I want to, but it's always so far down on my list and that part of my life my just be over...sad. I still have that cosplay channel on YouTube that I'm not sure what to do with, but we'll see. (I'm putting my CATS costuming supplies on watch, if I don't use them in the next year, I'm going to sell them...)

                8. Sell something in my Etsy store or another online selling platform.
I did it! I made my first Etsy sale! I wrote about it here.

                9. Be more present in the blogging community & gain more GFC and Bloglovin followers.
At the start of 2013 I had 3 Bloglovin followers.

                Halfway through 2013 I had 71.

                Now I have 91.
Not bad not bad, I'd love to double (or triple, or quadruple!) that number in 2014!

                10. Take a photo an hour once a month.

                DONE!

                January
                May
                June
                July
                August
                September
                October
                November
                December

                11. Finish the first book in my 'The London Jellicles' series.
Yeahhhhh no. Uggg. I love CATS, it was my first fandom. I'll always see it when it's in town and never stop loving it...but I just don't know if I'll ever finish that story.

                12. Read 25 books, 10 new to me.
I stopped this goal. I love reading for pleasure but with the pressure to do it super fast and not at my own pace. (I read in my head the speed I would read out loud and apparently that's slow?) I did read a ton and enjoyed every moment. Oh how I love books!

                13 . Go to Japan.

This did not happen this year...but it will in 2014!!! I can't wait!

I'll be posting my 2014 goals later this week. Thanks for reading!
                J.

4 Simple Goals *before 2014: Results!

One of my favorite lifestyle blogs, A Beautiful Mess, did their 4 Simple Goals tag again a the end of the year. Seeing as it's 2014, lets see how I did! You can read my first post about this here and read my progress post here.
                1. Buy a succulent. I got one! It was a gift from my dad for Christmas. He got one for my mom as well. He picked out the planter and planted and arranged the succulents. It was so perfect!

                2. Inbox zero. I kept getting really close to this, but then Project For Awesome happened and my inbox exploded. (I have a short clip of John Green mentioning my channel in my 2013 Recap video!) I'd like this to happen before the end of the month though.

                3. Complete one more 2013 Goal. Done! I'll post about them next week. ;)

                4. Rethink my shoes. So, I wore flats to New Years. I really can't wear heels anymore. I got a pair of nice Steve Madden boots from Jim for Christmas and I've been wearing them almost every day. I'm going to count this goal as completed. My foot is not fixed yet, but I'm taking care it it.

Three out of four, not bad. And the reason for the failed goal is actually an achievement, so I'm very satisfied with '4 Simple Goals' this year.
                J.

4 Simple Goals *before 2014: Update

Update time! Remember this post? Well lets see how I'm doing on those goals...

                1. Buy a succulent. I've been browsing Etsy for these and have found quite a few I like. However, I mentioned to Jim that I do want one so I think I'm going to wait till after Christmas just in case.

                2. Inbox zero. WELL, I was very close to achieving this yesterday when this happened. So thanks to John Green featuring my P4A video in yesterday's live stream, I have a few more emails to sort out.

                3. Complete one more 2013 Goal. Oh yeah, did a few more actually. You'll have to stay tuned to find out which ones I completed. ;)

                4. Rethink my shoes. This one has been an interesting journey. So far I got rid of half of my heels but have yet to buy new boots and comfortable shoes yet. This goal is in progress. The sole inserts were a bust so I went to see a podiatrist for my foot, and though I need to get an MRI to be sure, there is a big chance I've been walking on a fracture for the last 14 years(!) I want to wear heels on New Years...perhaps I'll bring flats and go back and forth. Argggg, my poor foot.

                J.

                Learning How to Sell Online

Honestly, I've been feeling like I'm in a bit of a blogging rut lately.  It's the end of the year and blogging topics are the last things on my mind right now. So lets get back to basics. My blog is my journal, my very-public-not-entirely-just-for-myself journal...but still my journal. So what would I write about if I were keeping a physical journal? (How I'm bummed that I'm not keeping a physical journal right now?) I would blog about how I made my first ever Etsy sale last week!

Now, I've sold my creations before. (Mostly at craft fairs, commissions, and through friends.)  I've just never sold anything specifically through Etsy. Last year, in the months before the start of 2013, I made a small goal to make my first sale on Etsy. (My shop is a little over a year old.) I, however, failed. Now, a year later from that goal, I've finally succeeded. There was even a time this year I was debating giving up. I did not renew my Etsy listings and listed some things on Storenvy with no luck. This October I decided to give Etsy another shot and it happened! I made a sale!

I know that one sale does not mean I can quit my day job and start calling myself an entrepreneur, but it's a start. I am going to buckle down and really start taking my shop seriously now. If you own an Etsy shop and have any advice or tips I would be so grateful!

If you are interested in my shop it's called Nerdy Monsters and can be found at: NerdyMonsters.etsy.com
I sell handmade designer plushies, jewelery, accessories, and more.
I am also starting to send out a shop newsletter which you can sign up for here.
The monsters and friends are also on Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr.
                J.

                4 Simple Goals *before 2014

Last year I participated in A Beautiful Mess' 4 Simple Goals tag so I thought I'd do it again this year! I went for a few out of my control things back then so I am making sure this time my goals are attainable yet important to me.
                1. Buy a succulent. Simple enough. I don't have any living plants in my apartment because we don't get much sun. I wish I lived in a place with a garden but that won't be for a long time. So I want to see if I can not kill a small succulent.

                2. Inbox zero. I want to reach and mantaine (at least for a bit) zero messages in my email inbox. After I downloaded Mailbox on my phone I was able to reach it for a few weeks but it sadly did not last. I really really want to get there again.

                3. Complete one more 2013 Goal. Ideally I'd like to complete more than one but at least one more would make me happy. I'll be sure to write a result;t post about that list once 2014 starts, and actually I think I did pretty well.

                4. Rethink my shoes. I've recently been having feet problems and have to wear sole inserts in all my shoes now. They unfortunately don't fit in all of my current shoes and I still have some shoes from  high school(!) so I need to go through all of them and get rid of some. Also, my heath is more important then cute platform sandles.

                J.

                July Report Card

I know tomorrow is the last day of July, but OI'll be honest with you: I am not getting anything done tomorrow that's not work. I'm checking into the Anihiem Hilton for VidCon and starting my mini vacation. That's why I am writing up my report card today. It's for this goal thing one of the blogs I read, She Learns as She Goes, does monthly. Welp, lets see how I did!

Get Ready For VidCon | A
asdfghjkl;! I am ready (for the most part) to go to VidCon! As I just said, tomorrow I check into the hotel and won't get home till Sunday night. I am beyond excited. I have everything ready, I just need to pack it all.

                Jim's Birthday! | A+
Like I said before in the progress report, it was great! I love him so much.

Add To My Shop | C
I actually decided to wait to add things to my Storenvy shop till after VidCon. I want to be able to promote them and ship them in a timly manner if someone wants them right away. So next week I'll get going on this.I'm giving myself a C for this since I did decided to change this goal.

Get Back Into YouTube | A+
I have been a lot more inspired this month and feel as if my videos are getting better. I posted a channel trailer video that I like well enough. I think that will be something I do continue to update from time to time. I also have started planning future videos and I am really excited to share them with the world!

                Finish Reading A Casual Vacancy | F

Nope. I could take this time to read you off a list of excuses but instead I won't. I did read a bit of it...but it's just not a page turner for me.

                Overall Grade | B-
I'm pretty disopointed, the not reading really brought me down. I'm not sure if I'll do this every month, but it was pretty helpful I think.

                J.

                Mid-July Progress Report

July is halfway over and I know this is going up a few days past the midway point, but I'm just so busy! It's a good kind of busy though. I started blogging for IGGPPC and Wonderly and I reached 1,000 subscribers on YT. It's just been and eventful month.

                Get Ready For VidCon
I went shopping for some new threads for the con. I decided to nix the idea of getting new business cards but I am going to make some buttons to give out to my subscribers. (As I mention in the video I posted today, ha-za!) Hotel plans are for the most part square, I just need to pay my roomie. Things I still need to do are buy some healthy snacks, buy some not-so-healthy energy substances, review the agenda and make panel decisions, plan the CalNerdCon meetup, and pack. I'm so excited!

                Jim's Birthday!
It was so great! He basically got two parties. The day before his birthday was his good friend Vince's birthday. So when midnight struck, we all tosted to Jim (and Scott, another birthday buddy!) Then on the night of the next day his family came over. We ate dinner out and then we all hung out at our apartment. (Most of his family had not seen our apartment yet.) Jim got a cake I made him and lots of great presents. It was a blast!

                Add To My Shop
I still need to add stuff to my Storenvy shop! There's also a contest over at IGGPPC for creating merch and selling it on Etsy. I know I don't do much with my Etsy shop these days since it's only loosing me money, but I might use this contest thing as an opportunity to get it up and running again. Maybe.

                Get Back Into YouTube
Ok, future Jenny, please please please do not wait till after work on Wednesday to start filming a video for Thursday! I have so many ideas for YT but since I'm at work for 9 hours 5 days a week it's so hard to put in the time. Weekends are great but they fill up fast. (I do have friends, I know it's surprising.) I'm not giving up though. I just need to find more YouTubey friends who like making videos. Come on LA, lets do this!

                Finish Reading A Casual Vacancy
I've been reading it. See, I'm in the background of my own video reading it! (No one's commented on the double me yet...I find that funny.) I don't know if I'll get through it before VidCon but I'm going to make a better effort this week.

                Halfway Through 2013

At the start of the year I made a big post with all of my goals for the year. Since it's half way through 2013, lets see what has been done, abandoned, and still on the horizon.

                1. Take a boat ride with Jim.
This one will happen, it just hasn't yet.

                2. See Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Nuart, dressed up.
I hope I get to do this in October. I just need a large group to go with me. =P

                3. Eat at 10 new restaurants in LA. - I decided to include bars if I got food there ;)

                1. Sake House By Hikari  B (good sushi, but nothing special)
                  2. Jackson Market and Deli  A+ (amazing sandwiches! It's also a way cool convenience store)
                  3. Susan Feniger's STREET  A- (loved it, but way expensive)
                  4. E K Valley  C (not bad but not great)
                  5. The Edison  A+ (such atmosphere! Only had fries for food but the cocktails were great)
                  6. Tusquellas Fish & Oyster Bar B (decent fish tacos)
                  7. Victor Jr's.  B (pretty good pizza but not my favorite)
                  8. Blind Barber A (love the speakeasy/behind an actual barbershop thing & the grilled cheeses are amazing!)

                4. Visit the LACMA.
Yes! We did! We also got to see the Stanley Kubrick exhibit and it was my favorite! I was also the day I chose for my Photo an Hour post, so that is coming soon!

                5. Visit the MOCA.
Not yet...I hope it happens though.

                6. Go on a date with Jim to the Griffith Observatory.
We've talked about this, so hopefully very soon.

                7. Re-start 'The Jemima Project'.
Oh boy...I have not even thought about this once. However, I have decided to start a cosplay channel on YouTube. Perhaps that will inspire me...eh.

                8. Sell something in my Etsy store or another online selling platform.
I've mostly given up on Etsy. Nine months and zero sales. I'm keeping it but focusing more heavy on my Storenvy shop. I have at least sold there in the past and it does not cost me anything to list.

                9. Be more present in the blogging community & gain more GFC and Bloglovin followers.
At the start of 2013 I had 3 Bloglovin followers.

                Halfway through 2013 I have 71(!)

This could be partially due to GFC ending but I'm still proud!

                10. Take a photo an hour once a month.
                January

                Febuary
                March
                April
                May
                June - done, coming soon!

                11. Finish the first book in my 'The London Jellicles' series.
*blink* Ummm...yeah no. This one might be abandoned, we'll see.

                12. Read 25 books, 10 new to me.
                1. The Hobbit

                2. Y: The Last Man, Vol. 7: Paper Dolls

                3. Y: The Last Man, Vol. 8: Kimono Dragons
I'm doing real bad on this one. This year has been so busy and after work activities have left little time to just take some time to read. I realize this is something that needs to change in my life and hopefully I can do better during the second half of 2013.

                13 . Go to Japan.
                 ?????????

I actually have until April 2014 if this is going to happen...so, maybe?

July Resolutions: Let's be Productive, Shall We?

I love being productive and getting things done, however...I also really love my couch and Netflix. This month I want to be better at being creative and using my time wisely. One of the blogs I read, She Learns as She Goes, does a monthly resolution link up and I'm taking part this month. What that means is there's this post (with all the goals), there's a post half way through the month with a progress report, and then a post at the end of the month with the report card. Let's see how I do...

                Get Ready For VidCon
VidCon starts on August 1st, so July is my planning month. I'm debating on getting some new business cards made (might not need to) and I need to finalize hotel plans, and lots of other little details. It will be my third time going and I am so excited!

                Jim's Birthday!
He does not like making a big deal out of his birthday so celebrating will be on his terms, but that doesn't mean I can't plan a few surprises for him.

                Add To My Shop
I have leftovers from the craft fair I have yet to add to my new Storenvy shop. I want to get everything listed and looking pretty.

                Get Back Into YouTube
Ok, so to be fair, I never left...per say. I've still been posting every Thursday. I just lost my passion for a while. I have the last episode of LMU'sNTRG-LP to post this Thursday, but after that I need to vlog again. Get real connected again before VidCon.

                Finish Reading A Casual Vacancy
I've been so bad at my 25 books a year challenge this year. Last year I managed 10, but I think it'll be even less this year. (Working 9 hours 5 days a week & uploading a video or more a week & blogging at least 3 times a week & running an online shop & running a local nerd meetup & socolizing with other humans regularly...does not help...not that they're excuses.) I at least need to finish this book.
