Jenny Lewis dress

Jenny Lewis Dress
Today I'm participating in another outfit post link up sort of thing started by my blogger friend, Nessbow. The theme this time was "My Style Icon." I could have done so many different women, real, famous, or fictional. Who I chose was the musician Jenny Lewis. I don't know exactly what image of Jenny Lewis that inspired the purchase of this dress, but ever since I bought it I've been calling it my 'Jenny Lewis dress.'
Jenny Lewis Dress
I've loved Jenny Lewis since high school and her early Rilo Kiley albums. She's one of the few female musicians I really felt a connection with. (I tend to gravitate towards bands with all dudes.)  I think my favorite Jenny Lewis album is Rabbit Fur Coat (With The Watson Twins). Here's my favorite song off that ablum, You Are What You Love.

Forbidden Planet | Science Fiction Double Feature

Today I'm reviewing the 1956 film, Forbidden Planet. It was the first science fiction film where the entire story takes place on a planet far from earth and the humans travel in a spaceship of their own. This could be why it's my favorite of these films so far, leaning more towards a Star Trek sort of story and moving away from the classic 'alien invasion' plot. It takes place in the 23rd century and a crew of space explores travel to a far off planet to research an expedition from 20 years ago.

T-Shirt and Jeans - An Outfit Post

T-Shirt and Jeans
So I've finally admitted to myself that I run a lifestyle blog. I've hid away from the genre, but I'm not sure why. Lifestyle blogs are among my favorites! In fact, if I had to honestly pick two categories for my blog it would be: geeky/nerdy & lifestyle. Welcome to my life I guess, I hope we can be friends! So, one of the best tropes of a lifestyle blog is the 'outfit post.' I love outfit posts! Sometimes they are called 'What I Wore, or 'Outfit of the Day' and they are always full of cute fashion ideas, ideal photography, and more dresses than I've ever owned.

I'd like to venture into that world myself. I sort of have, a bit. It took a blog linkup and a bit of cosplay (on my part) to 'force' me take that leap. Check that out here. I had fun and I want to do more! The thing is, if I'm being honest, I wear a t-shirt and jeans more than anything else. It's my go-to outfit for the everyday. Seriously, I wear that combo year round!
T-Shirt and Jeans
I want to stay true to myself but I also want to branch out with my personal style. It's not that I don't wear cute dresses with Peter Pan collars and nifty handmade jewelry every so often; I just feel if all of my outfit posts were that cute and put together I'd be a tad dishonest. At the same time I don't want every outfit post I make to feature me in my t-shirt and jeans. So I'm getting that confession out of the way right now.  I love my t-shirt and jeans! Hank Green put it nicely in his song titled 'T-Shirt and Jeans' "I try not to say too much with just my clothes". Oh Hank, you really get me.
I have another outfit post linkup thing going up next week and it's sort of a cross between super cute and normal lazy me. Also, I wish I had some beautiful wonderland to take my photos in like Kaylah or Amanda, so hopefully my indoor setup is even half as nice as Kate.

Do you regularly do outfit posts? Do you get dressed up for them or do you shoot whatever you happen to be wearing? Do you have a photographer? Indoors or outdoors? I really want to do this! I want to be girly and cute and talk about fashion every once in a while but also stay true to my nerdy t-shirt wearing self. Kristina does a great job of this I think, I guess I just need go for it. Any advice?

Photo an hour >> August 31st

Some days you just stay inside and do nothing. Jim pointed this out to me last month when I was bummed we had no plans on the last day of the month. The day I remembered I had yet to do my 'Photo an Hour' project. (whoops, just in time!) He said I should be true to our life and not hide the not-so-adventurous days. So here you are, our lazy day. Yes, I do realize I forgot to take my camera off of video mode. Enjoy the 16:9 photos...

Doctor X | Science Fiction Double Feature

Today I'm reviewing the 1932 film, Doctor X. It was based on a play called The Terror. The basic story is that of a series of murders have been linked to a medical academy. Doctor Xavier is given 48 hours to find out who the killer is before the police get involved. So he takes everyone, including his daughter Joan, to his Long Island estate to run some experiments to solve the mystery.  On top of all of that, a newspaper reporter, Lee Taylor, gets mixed up it all of it.

Overall I really enjoyed the film and how unexpected a story it was. I was expecting a Doctor Frankenstein type story, and this was not at all that. What's perhaps the most interesting is the film was made right before studios enforced the new Motion Picture Production Code. That's how they got away with such controversial themes like murder, rape, cannibalism and prostitution.

Room Tour: New Dressers - After

Jim and I bought new dressers from IKEA and here is how I organized mine. I use to have the right corner of the room for my things but I gave Jim that space and I now have the left wall by the door. I moved the small dresser and bookcase to the main living room and now it's actually perfect!

To the left of my dresser I have my CATS poster above my clothing rack. I don't keep cloths there all the time, as I often use the rack as a backdrop holder for video making.
Above the dresser I have framed prints of two of my favorite paintings. The Storm by Pierre-Auguste Cot, I sat at The MET and The Farewell of Telemachus and Eucharis by Jacques-Louis David I saw at The Getty.
I won this beautiful glass case from ABJ Glassworks via KittyAndBuck. I usually display my favorite rings inside it, right now it holds two JewelMint rings.
I really want to do this DIY on this glass tray I found at a secondhand store, but in the mean time it still does it's job of holding my multitude of sprays and perfumes. (and rings, and brooches, etc.)
To the right of my dresser I still have my necklace rack. (I think it's supposed to be a belt rack.)
I found a coat hanger thing at the same secondhand store, painted it black, and I'm using it to hang up my purses. (Storage tip: When your purses aren't being used, they can store things too!)
Below the necklaces and purses I'm using an old media stand for (some of) my shoes. (There's one of my camera bag purses in it's dust bag on the right.)
Thanks for reading! If you like these sort of posts let me know!

Room Tour: New Dressers - Before

When you live with your significant other and you share a room, there's always the chance the person with the most things will tend to take over the space.  That's what happened with Jim and I. He is a simple man and I am a borderline hoarder. We deiced we both needed our own dressers and that meant re-organizing. Before I gave up my little corner to Jim, I took some photos of the space. Here's what it looked like before. Stay tuned, tomorrow I'll show you the after!
The bracelet display is one I made, see how to here.
Actual shark teeth I won at a paleontology club meeting.
A post card from one of my favorite artists, Liselotte Eriksson. The model is Johanna Öst.
I've had this map of Middle Earth for forever and always wanted to display it somehow. So, recently my dad mounted it on a wooden plaque for me that he made. (My dad is really into woodworking and always makes me things.)
 I...may need another bookcase soon.
I kinda have a thing for designer plush. My blue cat, Gato Delux, is an Ugly Doll. The red fox and the white owl from the previous photo are from Fairweather Friends. The blue monster is one of my designs and you can get him at Nerdy Monsters and Magic World.
On the bottom shelf lives my LOL Throwboy pillow.
Tomorrow I'll show you how we re-organized the space and what we did with our new dressers!
Thanks for reading!
